I thought this was weird to ask. Do you know if there is any reason for asking this? I skipped it for now because I just don't know what I should put in there that isn't in my PS/resume. Should I tell them I like to play soccer on Saturday mornings?

I just added the ECs that I've been listing on my other apps and separated with semi colons. Not really sure why UVA prefers a block of text, but I don't think there's a way around this. For the interests, I just listed what I have on my resume along with a few minor hobbies. I honestly don't think they give that much weight to the application form itself
