depends what schools you're applying to and your GPA otherwise... if its just "family stuff" and nothing like death of a family member, I would not mention it - they will assume that it is something like that if you have decent grades otherwise. If your grades are kinda "meh," then they might view the P/W as he was gonna get a D/F... it really depends on your circumstance

at the very least, it is not NECESSARY more likely than not
