A LITTLE HELP PLEASE!
Hey everyone so I am really trying to get into The University of Miami School of Law. I have gotten the impression that I can get in with anything above a 150 on the LSAT (I'm not really worried about getting scholarships, I just want to get in) due to the admittance of my fellow classmates. I have a 3.8 GPA (Top 10% in my class), have written an undergraduate thesis (may possibly get published), will be graduating with honors in political science (my major), have assisted my professor in writing a book, interned with the Obama campaign, currently serving on a recreation advisory board for my local government (hoping to get a letter of rec from an elected official) and will possibly be working as a U.S. government high school teacher this upcoming fall (I'm taking a year off). A classmate of mine with similar credentials (substitute my internship with the Obama campaign and service on the advisory board with her internship with the UN) got in with a 3.4 GPA and an LSAT score of 151. Another one I know got in with a 3.9 and 152 LSAT (Has an MA and worked as a teacher for a few years). So what do you guys think do I have a shot? I have taken 2 LSAT practice tests so far and scored a 145 on the first and a 147 on the second. Obviously, I am not a good test taker but I think in the next month in a half I can raise my score by 4 points..

It's really my dream school and I just don't think my LSAT score can make it past 152-153

2 tests is nothing. You should take a few dozen. Search for the Pithypike guide here on TLS. Don't go to Miami.

Dont take the test in June. Youll need more time than that.

Well If you want get technical, I also scored a 140 and 144 back in Feb before I started taking my prep course through Kaplan.. I appreciate all the responses but do you guys think I got a shot if I crack 150 given everything else on my application?ImNoScar wrote:2 tests is nothing. You should take a few dozen. I do have the opportunity to take it 1 more time if need be in October (1st attempt I was marked as absent) but I'd rather just get it over with in JuneNova wrote:Dont take the test in June. Youll need more time than that.

The LSAT is more important than your GPA from 4 years of undergrad. Treat it as such, and give yourself enough time to max out your score. You very likely wont do that by June, so you shouldnt waste an attempt.ALeal90 wrote:I do have the opportunity to take it 1 more time if need be in October (1st attempt I was marked as absent) but I'd rather just get it over with in JuneNova wrote:Dont take the test in June. The Kaplan prep course is shit, and if you haven't spent 200+ hours studying for the LSAT you absolutely will not maximize your potential.

So basically, you don't think I have a shot with my credentials and a score of 150+?

You are asking the wrong questions. Miami is not a good law school, and with that GPA you have the potential to attend somewhere much better, and/or Miami for free if you'd prefer. Setting your goal as 150+ is ludicrous, you are undoubtedly capable of far far better.ALeal90 wrote:So basically, you don't think I have a shot with my credentials and a score of 150+?

Haha I mean I guess by your measurements I'm an idiot.. But what do you mean by "trap school"? I have some pretty good connections in the federal gov't (none of whom can give me a solid letter of rec because I haven't worked for them yet) so the loans will not be a problem.ImNoScar wrote:Are you a troll or just an idiot? Re: A LITTLE HELP PLEASE!
OP,
Do you want to be a lawyer? I sense that you want to go into government or into politics. The days of lawyers dominating either of those fields are long gone due to the creation of graduate level education and specialization in policy fields, although there is some drag since the most visible members of government (ie Congress and the President) started their careers back when the only people with graduate degrees were professors, doctors, and lawyers.
I have a lot of friends who are in governmental or party policy work well above the intern level, and a lot of friends with law degrees, and there is literally no overlap.

Plan is to be USAF JAG then run for some sort of public office. But nobody is yet to answer my question. If Miami is as bad as you guys say it is.. I guess I got a pretty good shot?

I don't believe absent counts as a take (compared to a cancelled score, which does). LSAC may have changed this in the last year or so, but I would google it to make sure.ALeal90 wrote:I do have the opportunity to take it 1 more time if need be in October (1st attempt I was marked as absent) but I'd rather just get it over with in JuneNova wrote:Dont take the test in June. Also, most people are capable of scoring 165+. Your goal should not be 150+. I don't care if you think you're a bad test taker. The LSAT is an incredibly learnable test, if you put in the time and effort. I would recommend diving hard into studying and strongly consider waiting until August.
Also, even if you want to go to UM, get a 165+ and get a substantial scholarship so you don't strangle yourself with a ton of debt. Your fed govt "connections" are very unlikely to result in a job after law school--hiring for the federal government has been reduced drastically in the last few years and not many people are getting federal jobs straight out of law school, let alone people from UM. Get a 165+ and consider whether UM is really your dream school when you have the option of schools where the employment stats aren't shitty.
