My brother says that he can get me a LOR from a member of the Texas State Legislature who is an alum of the law school I am applying to. Sounds good but I have never met the guy and I don't know that a letter from a person that doesn't know me, regardless of his position, would be helpful to me.
Any thoughts on this?

It won't be helpful. LOR writers have to know you.

Adcomms would rather read something from someone who can actually speak to your abilities than some generic recommendation
