General Admission Help

Post by mvonh001 » Fri Oct 26, 2012 9:49 pm

1) If i graduate in December and am applying for ED to georgetown, will my grades from my final semester be included in my GPA that is sent to the college? If not, should I wait and apply regular decision if my gpa will be increased for a 3.14 to a 3.24 if my last semester is included?

2) Should i stay an extra semester if that means my GPA will increase from a 3.24 to a possibly 3.32, or should i get work experience from december until i start school in august? and if i do go the work experience route how do i explain that on my application?

3) If I have a 1.5 GPA from my first school i went to but then transfered and have since gotten a 4.0, should i include an addendum as to why my grades were so poor, and why they are so good now? I could attribute it to my younger brother being diagnosed with pdd or my substance abuse, if i were to go the route of explanation.

4) How do you feel about personal statements or addendums explaining that Im recovering from addiction and have been clean for 2 years, and that is a reason my grades were so bad but when i left my old school and changed my environment i brought myself around and focused on my schooling (obviously not exactly worded like that and with better reasons, but as a general idea for a PS). I read Gtown liked to read about struggles in your life that you have overcome, but do you think that they actually mean it?

5) What lsat score do I need to get into a top 14 school like Gtown, UCLA, USC, or UPenn? Preferably Gtown.

thanks everyone for your insight.

1 and 2: the extra GPA in december helps, but the extra semester will come too late
3: it'll help, but not a lot.
4: high risk - maybe you'll find a sympathetic ear, maybe you'll find people who don't understand and/or loathe the idea. I wouldn't.
5: USC/UCLA, though solid schools, are not T14. Considering how low your GPA is, you'll probably need to break 170 to have a good chance, but could give it a shot if you score in the high 160s (for all those schools)

Good luck

In reference to the extra semester, It would mean that i would defer my application to Gtown to regular admission rather than ED, but would that be advisable with a 3.24 than applying ed with 3.14?

Which do you suggest my grades addendum should address? PDD or Substance abuse?

Also, I was arrested for a dui but had it reduced to a reckless driving with adjudication withheld, I was also charged with having a prescription pad but that charge was dropped because it turned out to be a prop for a play at school, which i had told the officers about but they insisted on pressing the charges but the judge dropped them for lack of evidence, or something or other.

So do you think i should explain my substance abuse situation with an addendum that explains my dui? My substance abuse led me to the hospital in a coma for a week, i could tie that into the addendum about my dui, or i could leave that out. What do you think? But then i think my addendum about my dui will become an addendum about my struggles with substance abuse, and i think that will be too much information for the adcoms in an addendum about my dui. Am i Right?

I wanna include something about my substance abuse because I've read that Gtown thinks its a positive that I have overcome this struggle, and to go forward with all A's, i think that is a feat in and of itself, but I may be the only one who thinks that. Opinions?

I would include brief explanation of your past in an addendum. Stress being clean, stress how your grades have turned around since being clean.
So what should my addendum address? Just my past, my grades, or my dui? Should i do more than 1 addendum?

Seeing as you will probably need a 170 for Gtown which would also make you an auto admit for UVA ED, is there a reason you prefer Gtown over UVA?

to be honest, I haven't looked into UVA. I never saw the draw of that school, as location is very important to me. But now, after looking at it on this website, it seems to be a nice little party town. I do not know how well I will fare in such a small town, as I come from Miami, FL, but based on what this website has to say about it, it seems nice enough with enough going on.

But my schools that I intend to apply to are as follows : UPenn, Gtown, NYU, UVA, UCLA, USC, UT-Austin, and a bunch of other safetys.

Any advice on the order I should apply to them in terms of ED, for instance UPenn has the 2nd ED that I could do for a backup if my ED to Gtown doesn't go as planned, or if I chose to wait it out until december and just apply to Upenn 2nd ED, Gtown regular but still early, and UVA (ed?) Would that be necessary??

Thanks

Law school quality of life is probably pretty fungible. You spend a lot of time studying and most of the people you know are law students.

But if you are a general it should be a great boost to your cycle.

Like in the military. But definitely focus on the level of debt you take out and job prospects. The nightlife at all of the T14 is going to be a downgrade compared to undergrad in Miami.

So based on the schools that i picked what do you suggest that i do for best job prospects (id like to do big law and somewhere that is a city, like miami, ny, ca, dc)

I really need help figuring out which is the order of schools that i will apply to in reference to the ed'ing and timing...

I also have decided against staying an extra semester and am going to be sending in my current lsat scores with the new scores that i recieve as an addendum on whatever application i send in.

There are all sort of threads on EDing and the cycles. Kind of depends on where you want to end up working. I think there is an order of schools you can ED to that helps to maximize your chances. Like ED Penn=>ED UVA=>ED GULC

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
