Letter of recommendation, submitting electronically

Post by defdef » Fri Oct 26, 2012 2:29 am

My last recommender isn't the best with computers and asked if it was okay if she just emailed me the letter to submit electronically. Is this illegal / will screw me? The reason post mail isn't the best option is just due to being overseas and timeliness, but I will do that if necessary.

Is faxing not an option?

The electronic submission process isn't difficult... It's a little sketchy, but here's how you could do it:

1. Obtain your recommender's permission to do this.
2. List her as a recommender with all the correct information and send the electronic submission request to her e-mail address.
3. Ask her to forward the email LSAC sends her to you.
4. Ask her to send you a copy of the LOR.
5. Don't tamper with the LOR.
6. Follow the directions in the e-mail, put in her information where LSAC asks for it, and upload the LOR.

Here's what the e-mail she'll forward back to you will look like:

Thanks for the help! But by "a little sketchy" do you mean that this is explicitly forbidden and I could get in trouble for it? I want to avoid any risk. I'll check if faxing is an option for her.

Well, I figure that as long as you do it with her explicit permission, you'd be okay. Have her fax it if you can, though.
