Re: App now, or try to get something on my resume and app later
Not that I've had this experience or anything, but I would think that applying in February with 4 months of volunteering would hurt more than applying now sans the 4 months volunteering would. As we always read: "it's a numbers game bro." If your numbers are good enough, and you have other things on your resume, you could always say you were traveling. You had to be doing something.

I can't imagine the positive impact of four months of volunteer work outweighing the negative of applying that late. Maybe I am wrong. Wouldn't the gap still be there?

The problem is still that they're going to see you started the job right when applying. My assumption would be that you signed up for those gigs just to have a more-recent entry on your resume, and that casts you in a bad light. You'd really need to stick it out for a few months before I would start to think you were doing it because you wanted to, and it just happened to peripherally help your law school application.Betharl wrote:Well, I would still apply as soon as I could. The point is that I don't know when I am going to be able to start volunteering. It depends when these people get back to me. If I started volunteering at both places next week, I would put that on my resume and apply right away. That way it would look like I had at least started doing something resume building instead of just having a gap.

I would, and I would start those activities in the meantime. Then, I would have something for a LOCI/hold or, if the schools are taking awhile to consider my application, send in an updated resume after a few months.

Lol at severely hurting your admissions chancing by applying at the end of the cycle, when most spots are full, just to put a couple months of run of the mill volunteering on your resume. To admissions committees, this would seem like an obvious resume fluffing anyway, casting you in a negative light.
There is no positive way to spin this. Don't delay your app for such a misguided reason. Apply well before thanksgiving and write an addendum about the gap if you're concerned.
