Had To Withdraw Because Of An Emergency, Now I Owe $25,000
I had to withdraw from Brooklyn Law school because of an emergency and immediate need to relocate, and because I withdrew so early in the semester, the school is saying that I don't owe the loan lenders the tuition money, I owe them the remaining tuition balance of what I borrowed, which is $25,000. I talked to the credit and collections department. They said I have til the next fall semester to pay it off, or it is going to credit and collections. I am freaking out. I did not have any choice but to withdraw, how am I supposed to get $25,000 to pay them back within a year? Will my credit be destroyed? Are they bluffing? Will it really be sent to collections if I make steady payments but can't pay it all off in a year?

I think you'd probably be better off asking an actual lawyer about this.

I know this is a small victory, but at least you don't have to go to BLS.

Where did they get the 25k you owe? I'm assuming that is your COL expenses, and if so didn't you get those loans?

By next fall? Did you borrow from the mob? Sounds like they are bluffing to me. Are you sure they didn't say you had to make your first payment by then?

If it isn't owed to the lenders, does it count as student debt in that it isn't dischargeable?

If you got 25k in loans, why wouldn't you have to pay it back if you quit? It doesn't sound like they're making you pay tuition, just pay back the loans you received.
Edit: If you actually are being made to pay tuition even though you're not attending, your best weapon is PR. They're a money grubbing, terrible school and you should make a very loud, very public scene. Most schools discount tuition if you leave early in the semester, if BLS doesn't, it's because they want to screw you. PR is your friend in that situation.

I may have misread it, but aren't you just required to pay back the money you borrowed? If you borrowed $25,000, shouldn't you have $25,000 to give them? Surely you couldn't have blown much of that in 2.5 weeks.

Yeah I'm confused as well? What did you with the 25K you borrowed OP? Did you seriously spend it all already?LeDique wrote:That's how I read it as well.shredderrrrrr wrote:I may have misread it, but aren't you just required to pay back the money you borrowed? Doesnt the OP mean that they cancelled their loan but they still owe for the first semester tuition? I think Brooklyn is still charging them the tuition even though they withdrew because of emergency.

I think there should be a tuition refund policy in place. I can't find it for this year but last year they had some pro rats policy in effect. I didn't look that hard though, but there should be a way that OP doesn't owe this money except for the part of the year they attended.

The thing is that tuition is 50k and 38k for FT and PT, respectively. Neither of those numbers match up with said 25k.sunynp wrote:I think there should be a tuition refund policy in place. It seems as the books, housing, living & misc, transportation and loan fees total around 25k.
So in that instance, said 25k should be a loan, right? (Assuming the OP took out a loan.)

Maybe OP hasn't responded because they have an emergency?nmop_apisdn wrote:That's how I read it.sunynp wrote:Doesnt the OP mean that they cancelled their loan but they still owe for the first semester tuition? Is the 50k $25,000 per semester tuition?nmop_apisdn wrote:The thing is that tuition is 50k and 38k for FT and PT, respectively. Ah, I forgot that loans are disbursed per semester. I've never taken out a school loan, so I totally overlooked it.tfleming09 wrote:What's half of 50K?nmop_apisdn wrote:The thing is that tuition is 50k and 38k for FT and PT, respectively. Neither of those numbers match up with said 25k.
That's fucked up if this story is true.
ETA: The school should have some sort of pro-rated tuition, at the very least, for emergency situations. Charging full-semester tuition solely because the OP missed the deadline seems pretty fucked up.
