Nothing from high school on resume

Post by shifty_eyed » Fri Aug 17, 2012 11:10 am

Pretty much always true?

I started working at my current company while in high school, quit during college, and work here again. Should I include the high school position on my resume, or should I just leave it out? Different position in high school than I've had post-college.

I would leave it out. The resume isn't a comprehensive collection of everything you've done; it's a concise encapsulation of your best and most relevant experience and accomplishment.

I've been under the impression that high school info should be left out.

I'd only include something from high school if you were applying to a market which is a) extremely ties-centric, b) you high school was located in that market, and c) there's nothing else on your resume which indicates your ties to that market already.

This is for law school admissions. I don't think ties matter for that.

Unrelated but I saw somebody who had National Merit Scholar listed on his resume to a law firm. As a 3L. Don't be that guy.

Like, as a scholarship award for his undergraduate institution or listed as a separate award?

I thought the CW was to include UG scholarships, but I guess I am wrong. Good to know.

The hiring chair at my firm didnt think so, and I didn't put it on mine, but its possible people differ. It may be too because the antional merit scholarship is so heavily based on high school test scores (the screenign psat is done during soph yr right?) that it seems tacky.

Yeah, I have it currently on mine, but as part of a list, not it's own subpoint. It feels weird to me because it is based entirely on my PSAT score from 10th grade. But it was a full-tuition scholarship, so I don't know. I'm also fairly certain that no one will care about it, since it's not a particularly prestigious school and I didn't really accomplish much, haha.

Fair enough I guess. Thinking about it now it doesn't seem that unreasonable, but having the chair scoffingly point it out to me on someone's resume made me think it was. Maybe he was just cranky. I guess if you have room for it then it doesn't hurt, but if you have to start deciding what to leave off I'd think it'd go pretty early.
