Re: HAVE YOU READ THIS?
I read the Ivey guide....it helped me decide on a topic to write for my personal statement. My friend who started at Chicago last year swore by it.

Re: HAVE YOU READ THIS?
I've read parts of the Actual Harvard essays (since several friends have essays in there). To be honest, they're of varying quality. I would certainly suggest changes to a majority of them. I also find the commentary to be weak (the people writing it seem to be more interested in analyzing them as regular essays instead of as law school admissions essays; they also don't do a great job of analyzing them as regular essays).
If you want to get an idea of some essays that got people accepted to Harvard (either because of, or in spite of), pick it up. However, I don't think you'll learn much from it, and reading a variety of essays on the TLS forums is probably more useful (and free).
I haven't read Anna Ivey's guide, but she gives great advice.

I read Ivey's book. It was helpful, but that was before I discovered TLS (which has been FAR more helpful and relevant).
