Kinda freaking out right now

Post by Last123 » Sat Jun 02, 2012 10:01 pm

Hey everyone,

So first of all, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum. It didn't seem to fit anywhere else though.

Anyways, I applied to and was accepted off the waitlist for NYU Law to start this upcoming Fall. On my application, in the section asking about disciplinary action, I said that I had not been subject to disciplinary sanctions during undergrad. I just realized that this actually isn't true. I was caught with alcohol in my dorm room once, and got in some extremely minor trouble for it. I completely forgot about it (it happened in the fall of my freshman year, and I was put on housing probation for three months, which didn't actually involve any disciplinary action, just that they said I was on probation) until now, and I'm now really worried that it'll screw me over. Should I email the admissions office and explain what happened? They require a copy of my records from here, so I assume they'll find out either way. How bad is this?

There are two options:

1) You don't say anything and get smacked for it.
2) You call them, explain, and see what happens.

They won't not find out so it's better that you bring it up.

Not screwed at all. They may legitimately not find out ... Unclear that this is in a record NYU will see. Buy just disclose it to them. Send an email or make a phone call and request to amend your application. It sounds scary, but it will be okay.

That's nothing to worry about. That's completely minor and something they probably will not see. I wouldn't worry and I wouldn't tell them. Unless you got suspended from school, its nothing. But that's my opinion.

Meh, it's really minor, but it should be addressed. A lot easier to fix a really tiny oversight now then have it be a potential issue come background check for the bar exam. I doubt it would be an issue then, but there really is no good reason to not correct the mistake right now.

Does NYU require a dean'a certificate? It'll show up there.
Contact NYU, tell them you forgot.
They will most likely say it's not an issue (seriously, no kne cares about a single underage drinking violation)
But, if they find out from another source, the repercussions ate likely to be severe (they care about failure to disclose)

According to this, NYU does:

I might be in the same boat if they do show every minor violation.

Last123, let us know how it goes.

Bad advice. Call them up and let them know. Most likely, they'll say, "Oh, that happens sometimes. Just send us a letter explaining the situation and we'll add it to your file." It's probably not a game-breaker (like if you 'forgot' you were indicted for fraud), but it will be if it comes up later and you never clear this up.

As others have said, they're unlikely to care if you explain what happened. If you don't disclose, they're likely to care quite a bit that you weren't honest.
