Hi all,

I have been reading around and seeing people's emphasize on strong softs to have a good shot at HYS, but I am not quite sure by what is qualified as a strong soft (other than national prizes and such). I was wondering if you guys can rank my current "softs" from somesort of 1-10 scale or chances at T14 school assuming that my GPA/LSAT is at median for each school (if my canadian conversion to GPA is correct, I have 2B's from first year, and rest are A's A+s, so I think I will end up with a 4.0 +, but I have not taken the LSATs yet)

my involvement:
founder/chief editor of an undergraduate journal at my university Shows initiative but nothing really special or game changing
Federal research grant Good soft
Executive positions at a fraternity Stupid soft, nobody cares you were the Treasurer of your frat bro
Varsity wrestler Good soft
various student council positions Decent
Various mentorships from first years to grade 8s Don't know what this means, is it high school or college? If high school, don't even mention it.
Highschool council president (should I put this on a resume at all?)Don't put this on your resume

I think I will have 2 pretty solid recommendation letters as well (1 from a prof that I have been working with for 2 years, another from a prof who thinks I am some sort of mad genius)Doesn't matter at all.

Over all you have decent soft factors, but nothing game changing. You'll do exactly what your numbers say for the most part. Maybe get a couple reaches. Nothing spectacular.

this would obviously go under your "volunteer work" section of your resume.
I would include it.

To add to the analysis, I would qualify what you have as at the level of involvement that HYS would consider perfectly acceptable for their schools, should your numbers match up. If you don't have the numbers, don't expect to get in based on these softs; if you do have the numbers, expect these softs to be enough to get you in to at least 1/3.

I am a avid reader of Asha's blog, I read all of her posts and she continuely emphasize the importance of softs but TLS seems to have a different opinion?

Yale and Stanford are the only schools where softs matter, in that if you have the numbers, you still might not get in. You still have to have competitive numbers though. Softs won't get you in anywhere you don't have competitive numbers for.

Also, admissions deans are never going to admit that it's all about the numbers, even though it is. As Pancakes said, softs don't affect the rankings.

Softs are decent, not amazing, but decent.

Softs only act as a tiebreaker though, so if you don't have the numbers for a given school, they are unlikely to help.

Not saying it is a game-changing soft, but as treasurer of my Fraternity I was in charge of over $150,000 in funds + the rent for a year....that's a fairly large budget to manage and not as insignificant as you make it out to be...also, on the off chance that an admissions committee member was also a member of your fraternity you will definitely get a slight bump up

I applied to Yale and still haven't heard back from them. Never even thought about sending a LOCI. Never read a page of the waiting thread. Yale is like winning the lottery. You can play but any expectation of winning is just silly (unless you aren't like 4.0 179, but those people are so rare they barely count).
