all waitlists so far this cycle

Post by theaether » Mon Mar 05, 2012 5:32 pm

applied to 8 schools in late December: 1 hold and 3 waitlists so far. I would like some advice regarding sending LOCI's.

I don't have anything amazing to report on since I applied 2 months ago, just did the same vein of work I talked about in my essay/resume in my initial application. So am I just saying in my LOCI a mini why X for that school, and basically that I would attend if admitted off the WL? Just seems weird because with all these WLs, if more than 1 admits me, I would obviously have a decision to make, and would have to renege on at least one of my "attend if admitted" statements.

I would not committ in a LOCI to attend a law school if taken off the WL unless you are sure that is your first choice. Otherwise, not only can it look bad, but they can report it to LSAC who can report it to the school you ultimately accept, etc. etc. Bad idea all around.

You can certainly say why you are interested in school X without saying you would absolutely go there.

I just went to a meeting on LOCI (I've done some work for pre-law advisors, so I get sent to meetings like this from time to time) and there are a couple of important things to consider.
1. Make sure that everything you say in your LOCI is 100% spelled correctly and is 100% grammatically correct. It's the same as your PS, its going on your file, and will be considered when/if they decide to review your app to take you off the waitlist. If u talk lk3 this, it look bad. Remember this is a proffessional email worth investing in.
2. Say something worthwhile. If you're wasting someone's time who has to read your stupid LOCI that says absolutely nothing new they're that much less likely to take you off the waitlist. Either somehow add something new about your life (promotion, better grades, new life experience, etc) or why you want to go to that school that you haven't already said somewhere in your application. Don't waste people's time.
3. Short and sweet. They've already got a lot of materials from you, they don't need a disertation added. You were put on a WL because they already like you, you just need that extra push, it's a small push, not a giant leap.
4. You can send more than 1 LOCI, but make sure you're still following rule 2, sending the same LOCI repeatedly is just wasting time. Also, don't do it until you have something new to offer, because if you haven't had enough time to do something new with your life it is too soon after your last LOCI to send a new one.

HTH, let me know if you need any more info.
