Fortune 10 or BB?
I am a finance major (JR) and have an offer from one of the top 10 companies on the Fortune 100 list as well as a PWM analyst position at a regional BB bank. I understand that these are soft factors, but which one would you consider more impressive if I gave you my resume? I am applying next cycle and want a little resume boost.

Re: Fortune 10 or BB?
EDIT: For BB bank, read: Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, UBS.

Not sure about "impressiveness" of these positions, but financial analyst is certainly a more solid position than PWM.

Why do you want to go to law school? Sounds like a sweet intro gig...in a few years you can probably be making more than all of us, and have no loans.

I have definitely thought about going into business, but I just like law more. I know it's crazy, but Tupac would say "that's just the way it is."

This is for an SA position, right? Schools aren't going to care whether you had a PWM or CF SA. That said, if you are looking for FT work next year, the CF job will give you better training for most finance jobs. Unless, of course, you want to do asset management long term then I might advise for the PWM gig.

Yeah, it is just an SA position. Thanks for the advice.Patriot1208 wrote:This is for an SA position, right? Schools aren't going to care whether you had a PWM or CF SA. You should ask the guys over at wallstreetoasis about this. They'll know more than most here about what the positions actually entail.

Re: Fortune 10 or BB?
This is great advice but I already know how each of these opportunities would help a business career. The purpose of the thread was more to see which looks better on a LS app and ultimately, if at all, on a resume while applying for a corporate law position. Thanks for your comment though.sn20 wrote:You should ask the guys over at wallstreetoasis about this. They'll know more than most here about what the positions actually entail.

PWM is weak and not particularly hard to land, plus will give you next to zero networking. Go with the F10.

FWIW, I had a similar decision and took the analyst position at a PE after a family friend at a V5 law firm told me that it'll be much more beneficial if I want to get into m&a after law school.

This is beyond helpful. Was it just a SA or FT?JDizzle2015 wrote:FWIW, I had a similar decision and took the analyst position at a PE after a family friend at a V5 law firm told me that it'll be much more beneficial if I want to get into m&a after law school.

FT. Don't think it makes a difference though... A SA analyst gig will give you the same quant exposure (imo) that FT analysts get. If possible, I'd suggest trying to get a writing analyst position. That's what I did and even though I'm an 0L, I think the research, valuation, and risk management skills I acquired could come in handy for corporate clients one day.

It's a CF job, it will be FP&A and Cost accounting as a summer intern. He's not getting valuation or risk management skills.JDizzle2015 wrote:FT. Don't think it makes a difference though... As far as PWM at GS, it really depends on what you want to do. Knocking someone just for doing PWM is pretty lazy if he wants to get into asset management. Tons of guys at BBs go from PB/PWM to AM.

I don't want to do AM, I want to get into M&A law work or corporate lit.

You are asking the wrong message boars. Re: Fortune 10 or BB?
That's the point. It won't matter what you do for an SA. Even for full time it won't matter between the two. The only way it would really make a difference was if you did IBD and wanted to work in M&A. Or if you worked in PE and wanted to do PE. The difference between a FP&A SA and a PWM SA is literally meaningless for law school applications. Honestly, you should take the one that will make you the most money (which i'm guessing is GS) if you know you will be applying next year. But if you plan on trying for finance jobs next year and taking some time off, which basically everyone would advise, then you need to make the decision based more on what you would be interested in doing post graduation.gunner3 wrote:I don't want to do AM, I want to get into M&A law work or corporate lit.

Re: Fortune 10 or BB?

That said, my advice (and the advice given to me) is to go with the analyst position.
As a tangent, I don't even want to go into corporate law now. You never know what will change in the future... for now, just do whatever you think you'll enjoy more/you'll be able to learn more from.

I wonder who accidentally mis-voted in the poll. That's why it's good to leave polls open for people to change their votes.

Re: Fortune 10 or BB?
Eh, I get it lol. You work in PE, which is essentially the absolute best job you can get out of undergrad except for maybe a few VC jobs i'd rather have. If I had a PE job I certainly wouldn't even consider law school.JDizzle2015 wrote:Knocking pwm was just part of the culture where I worked, didn't really mean anything by it. I know many people in pwm who are doing very well for themselves.

Also, OP, it's worth noting that everyone just started talking about GS, but if it's UBS you definitely need to avoid.
