Email address question -- Should I be concerned?
So let's just say -- hypothetically, of course -- that the primary e-mail address on my applications is a tad, um, distasteful in nature. Should I then be concerned that adcomms will look negatively on this, and, if so, will it have an adverse impact on my cycle? Or is this just another instance of 0L paranoia?

What I don't understand is why you just didn't create a "tasteful" email for purposes of the application process. It takes 2 minutes. Honestly, I don't think it will impact your application much, if at all; however, depending on how "distasteful" it is it might be a shocker to adcomms going over your app though. But what the adcomms concern themselves with the most is your GPA, essay, etc....not email addresses.

I don't know whether it will affect you or not, but it was incredibly stupid to put an immature email contact down. Honestly, why would you not just use your school email?BiglawOrBust wrote:So let's just say -- hypothetically, of course -- that the primary e-mail address on my applications is a tad, um, distasteful in nature. If your email was "BigLawOrBust@gmail.com" you will get a huge boost to your application.

I know, man. I know. Look, hindsight's 20/20. I didn't use my school e-mail because I'm on a lot of spam lists on campus, so I didn't want my decisions getting lost in the clusterfuck.f7u12 wrote:I don't get why you wouldn't just create a grownup E-mail address for aps or use a .edu account instead.

Ok, thought about it some, and it's definitely not good. You can't do anything about it now, but if you're borderline at a school and they're taking a closer look at your app, it can only hurt.

It depends on the address, but it might hurt you.
I would go to GMail right now and register an account with some permutation of your last name and initials. This is just good to have for life in general.

Thanks, guys. FWIW, the address alludes to genitalia. I've had it since I was 13 and instinctively put it down for everything, but it wasn't until an off-hand remark from someone yesterday that I was prompted to think about it more closely.

oh come on, we gotta' know. Just let us know the username. You don't have to give us the domain name.
pleeeeeaaaaaasssseeee
Seriously though, nobody is going to be able to tell you here. The truth will probably vary from adcom to adcom depending on taste or whether they notice it, and whether they infer things about your maturity level. I'll tell ya' though, companies I have worked for have not hired or not interviewed people for this reason and similar reasons. Time to get a new email address... but I suspect you already knew this.
If your cycle is atypical, consider just re-applying next year.

Was that even funny when we were 13?
Edit: just realized I didn't have email when I was 13. Yep, I'm that old.

First off, I think the OP is either a flame or a troll...
Second, this is something that you should obviously think about way before even sending out applications. This is COMMON SENSE! It may not affect your cycle adversely, but it will definitely make you look VERY immature, stupid, careless, etc. GROW UP and get an adult email address!

Not a troll or a flame, but thank you so much to those who provided substantive answers. You guys are the bulwark of TLS, not these clowns who go around calling people flames and trolls.

I remember reading a Dean interview where they look badly on things like this and answering the phone with WASSSSSSSSSSUP, even going so far as hanging up on an admission notification and not letting the person in.

There was this guy who used to email my old boss all the time and his email address was toysfortwats@something. She used to delete without even reading.
I know, cool story, bro...but, yeah, looks totally unprofessional, not mature, and skeevy.

The bitch of that is that I bet the dude was just trying to hassle the annoying telemarketers who were calling him.JamMasterJ wrote:I remember reading a Dean interview where they look badly on things like this and answering the phone with WASSSSSSSSSSUP, even going so far as hanging up on an admission notification and not letting the person in.

Re: Email address question -- Should I be concerned?
yeah, it does suck. But I think the big issue is that schools are looking for people who are going to act professionally and I think it was for one of those schools that really pushes professionalism, a la NorthwesternBiglawOrBust wrote:The bitch of that is that I bet the dude was just trying to hassle the annoying telemarketers who were calling him.JamMasterJ wrote:I remember reading a Dean interview where they look badly on things like this and answering the phone with WASSSSSSSSSSUP, even going so far as hanging up on an admission notification and not letting the person in.

I too had a provocative hotmail address when I was 13. I stopped using it by the time I was in high school.rinkrat19 wrote:

I was playing extremely loud techno music when UCLA called me. It was complicated, I could barely hear them. It seemed to have no appreciable impact however.JamMasterJ wrote:I remember reading a Dean interview where they look badly on things like this and answering the phone with WASSSSSSSSSSUP, even going so far as hanging up on an admission notification and not letting the person in.
I do find the genitalia-related email address endlessly amusing however.

Wow. This just goes show us what a immature idiot you truly are. Maybe you should show this post and your immature email address to the ADCOMS...I bet they will love that
