Should I write a diversity statement?

Post by jediknight2424 » Thu Nov 17, 2011 4:25 pm

I'd like to write one about being Indonesian American. Is that appropriate or do I have to be URM?

Does writing one actually help?

Anyone can write a diversity statement, and a well written DS will certainly help.

The trick is to not assume that the admissions people will think Indonesian is diverse, but rather describe what being Indonesian has meant in your life and how that will add diversity to their school. In some areas, Indonesians aren't that uncommon. I am from Iowa and there are quite a few in Ames. That's not the case everywhere though. It may be worth more at some schools than others.
