Is there really a need for me to be neurotically cycling through the application status page for each and every school I have applied to, or will I get an e-mail when something is updated?

It depends on the school. Some will mail, some will call, some will only update the status checker when an admissions decision is reached.

I've doing the frequent checking thing also. This waiting game is not fun at all. But most of the schools I applied to have been sending "your application is complete" emails.
