Frankly, I think the GPA-only admissions are shady as fuck, whether it's Michigan or UIUC or whoever doing it.justonemoregame wrote:"I thought of it before Michigan.." - bet they love that association.

I found this bit disturbing as well, from Dean Hurd:
EDIT: from page 80
Just strikes me as weird.Unbelievably impressive stats for this year’s class. Unbelievably fabulous. Can’t tell you how great it is to be teaching students who are smarter than the best
students we were used to teaching at Penn those years ago. It’s a great gift to the
school and to us, as faculty. And it’s all YOU. Yea, yea, others help, but without
YOU this would not have happened. Not a chance. YOU are the reason this
school will rise in the rankings, rise in national esteem, and rise on the merits
beyond all other reasons.

It's also interesting how much he was given in raises over his career there. He started in the admissions office in 2003 after he graduated from UIUC, making about $38,000. Through promotions and multiple huge raises, his salary was brought up to over $130,000 for FY12. Wow. I also didn't realize he was so young.

Isn't Hurd the one who was fired for that admissions scandal a couple years ago? Two peas in a pod I guess...minnbills wrote:I found this bit disturbing as well, from Dean Hurd:

Well the guy was supposedly so good at bringing up UIUC's medians that it's not really a surprise he had other suitors.Samara wrote:It's also interesting how much he was given in raises over his career there. *shrug* I was trying to decide whether you were posting something factually incorrect, referencing the LSAT scores since the discussion seems to revolve mainly around that, or unnecessary for it's obviousness. I went with incorrect.NancyBotwin wrote:I said "my," not "my class."Cornelius wrote:NancyBotwin wrote:This makes me sad.

Re: U. of Illinois Law suspends Dean of Admissions
I remember back towards the beginning a number of people hypothesized the iLeap students were being given LSAT scores of 180. Not too far off I suppose.
During an interview with investigators, Pless stated that he put the 4.0 GPAs into the Dashboard for the iLEAP students as “placeholders,” which he forgot to update later with the students’ correct GPAs.

Yeah her name kept coming up over and over again, especially as an advocate for Pless' pay increases, if I remember correctly.Kilpatrick wrote: Hurd pretty much is a movie-villain. She was one of the worst teachers I've ever had

Heh.
With respect to the Class of 2014, Duff & Phelps analyzed whether providing a Why Illinois essay had any statistically apparent effect on admissions decisions. Duff & Phelps found, among other things, that the applicants who provided an essay were admitted (or denied or waitlisted) at approximately the same rate as applicants who did not, and likewise that applicants with similar LSAT scores and GPAs were admitted at essentially the same rate, regardless of whether they had submitted a Why Illinois essay or, if they had, how well they scored on the essay.
