TIME Magazine: Law School is Overrated
And the negative drumbeat continues... Now it's TIME magazine's turn to remind all of us about the perils of law school:
"Consumers Finally Figure Out That Law School is Overrated"

Wait, graduates from lower-ranked schools make less money? Thanks, WSJ/Time.

A lot of people think law school is law school, lawyers make a lot of money, therefore law school is amazing.acadec wrote:Wait, graduates from lower-ranked schools make less money? Thanks, WSJ/Time.

Re: TIME Magazine: Law School is Overrated
The really dumb part of these articles isn't that they aren't telling us something new. It's that they are pretending unemployed or underpaid JD is a new phenomenon.
A t14 degree did, but the majority of T1 grads, even during the boom, started below six figures. The vast majority of T2 grads did. And practically nobody at TTT's got six figs. And plenty of TTT students were unemployable.
Going to a nont14 was always a stupid mistake. Now T14s are a worse bet than before.

Wait, only people serious about being a lawyer should go to law school and not the people who don't know what else to do after undergrad?
Shocking.
Shocking.

I think that you are only mentioning the least useful part of the "advice." Did you get the part that says: "Finally, let your results on the LSAT influence your decision: If you aren’t qualified to get into an elite law school, consider that it might not be the right career for you anyway"?sd5289 wrote:Wait, only people serious about being a lawyer should go to law school and not the people who don't know what else to do after undergrad?

So sd5289, do you have an LSAT to get into an elite law school?

Not everyone interested in the profession is intent on BigLaw.

"Touro Law Center, Albany Law School and Creighton University School of Law have all announced plans to cut enrollment"
Good, now if all the rest of the non T1 schools follow suit law school might become less of a joke.

I'm going to W&M. It's not a T14, but it's one of the best law schools in the Southeast. What am I to think about all this?

This. Alot of people really have no idea about the distinctions. Most people I talk to think my decision to attend law school is fantastic. Some think it's foolish. Where I'm going probably only influences 10%-15%ish of these people in terms of which bucket they fall into.Desert Fox wrote:A lot of people think law school is law school, lawyers make a lot of money, therefore law school is amazing.acadec wrote:Wait, graduates from lower-ranked schools make less money? Depends. Do you have at least a decent scholarship/instate tuition? Plan to practice in the general region around the school? Have realistic expectations as to the options that will be available to you upon graduating? Are you ok with those options?LEPinBOS wrote:I'm going to W&M. If you answered yes to all those questions, then you probably made a decent choice.

That you should be on a full ride.LEPinBOS wrote:I'm going to W&M. It's not a T14, but it's one of the best law schools in the Southeast. What am I to think about all this?
Also isn't W&M less than three hours from 3 T14?

Within a 3 hour radius, your school is behind UVA, Duke, Georgetown and GWU (in that order). You should reconsider your prospects, which are not as good as W&M's website claim them to be. How much $$$ bro?Desert Fox wrote:That you should be on a full ride.LEPinBOS wrote:I'm going to W&M. It's not a T14, but it's one of the best law schools in the Southeast. Score a clerkship? Do relentless pro bono litigation in your local court until you build a practice?LEPinBOS wrote:I'm going to W&M. It's not a T14, but it's one of the best law schools in the Southeast. What am I to think about all this?
Law firms are being destroyed by their own horrendous structure:

You'll still be a lawyer, figure out what you want to do, and do it. I just wouldn't assume someone's going to hold your hand through that whole process.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
