Applying to Top Law Schools in the South: How Do I Look?

Post by 2legit2quit » Sun Jun 12, 2011 3:28 pm

Hello,

I'm about to start my application process. I live in Atlanta and I'll apply to schools across the South. Here's my makeup:

University of Utah:
3.5 GPA Political Science Major/Philosophy Minor (Honors Degree)
No LSAT
President of Fraternity
Captain of Lacrosse Team

I spent a lot of time on lacrosse and the fraternity, and I'm how these accomplishments will be looked upon by UGA and Emory if I have a 165 LSAT, despite sacrificing GPA points along the way.

Thanks,

Quinn

take the LSAT get a score

165 probably wont cut it... with that said.. if you can still raise the gpa and get a 165 it might work.. I didnt apply to UGA but I got 25k a year at Emory with a 165/3.74

165 means you probably have no chance at Emory, and if UGA's median goes up to 165 this year a 165 with a 3.5 might not be able to cut it if they follow the same admissions strategy of the past year or two (applicants this year with median lsats only are getting in with high gpas)

Get a 166.

I think you're sitting in an extremely good position right now. Without taking the LSAT, the schools can't objectively measure you, and will therefore be more willing to accept you based on your excellent softs. I can't believe more people don't utilize this strategy. Apply solely to T-14 and I can't wait to see your acceptance thread(s)!

1.) You don't have an LSAT score yet.

2.) The quality of Duke, Emory, and UGA in terms of GPA/LSAT scores they accept varies. I wouldn't lump them into a group like you seem to have done.

3.) You don't have an LSAT score yet.

do not listen to this poster. you shouldn't be dissuaded from attending school (and later living, and working) in the south just because you're black. yes, in some parts of the south racism is still the norm and you may encounter difficulty, but you can't live your life in fear of discrimination.

I'm not sure if this is some sort of ignorant dig at the south, a complete misunderstanding of how schools treat URMs, or an insult to MC Hammer.

Ok so, basically, yes, anytime anyone posts anything on here without an LSAT, that poster will receive 10 responses that say "Get an LSAT score and then we'll talk". Even though TITCR, hypothetically, here, with a 3.5 a 165 would pretty much be auto-WL and a 167 would just about be auto-admit. Your softs might give you a tie-breaker with other 166s. I'm not sure what to think of Emory; a lot of people on this site are pretty hard on them, and I personally wasn't too fond of the building or the admissions staff when I visited, but if you love Atlanta it's a good place to be, probably. I was really surprised I got WLed there, but if you apply early and get at least 166 you're looking good.

To answer your question, they will really like that you spent a lot of time on lacrosse and the fraternity. These accomplishments will be looked upon with awe. They may even address you as Captain or President in your acceptance letter.

I was a two-term president of my fraternity (took office my sophomore year, thuper frat), and I've had several T14 schools send me blank checks and acceptance letters. I haven't applied to any schools yet.

True story.

the upside to not having an LSAT is that they can't judge a poor score that doesn't exist

you've found the loophole

this thread is not as good as i thought it would be. i google searched OP based on his info, and he actually exists in RL. so unless it's an impersonator (a decent possibility), it's not a flame like i was sure it would be.

OP, aim a little higher on the LSAT and send a confederate flag with your application and you should be in

Just did the same... out of curiosity- how does a middie with 6 goals and 4 assists over 3 seasons become captain?

haha.
I'm new here but been reading thread for awhile and your not going to get any responses of substance without an LSAT.

OP and I can't be the only two people who didn't know softs were useless before this process started........cut the guy some slack.

Seriously though amigo, the LSAT is the biggest factor. Nail it, and you'll be fine.

Check out Tulane. Those softs are probably neutral, meaning at least you wont have to worry about anything besides your LSAT/GPA (i.e an underwhelming PS or Resume).

They're impressive for sure, but if there's one place where they lose their potency, it's law school admission.

Also: Why do you think these softs will be viewed specially by the south, or are you just applying to schools in the south and only the south?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
