Summer Intern?

Post by DMan27 » Thu May 12, 2011 7:29 am

I have already been admitted to a law school and an wondering if I should intern (unpaid) at a V50ish firm.

I would have to move and pay for rent etc so I would be losing $ but I don't have any internships or legal related WE on my resume so would this be a big help? Or any help?

This was discussed in another thread: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 2&t=154726

My response is the same. You won't learn anything, but it certainly won't hurt you in subsequent job applications if it seems like you know what you're getting yourself into. It probably hinges on whether the firm is in your target market after graduation (you mention having to move, and getting a job in say Columbus Ohio may not help much in a subsequent job search in New York), and how much money you would be losing.

The internship in the thread you are referencing is a bit different as it is a formalized program and a special case. In that case, you are basically treated as a summer associate and go through a lot of the same stuff that a standard 1L/2L SA does(although maybe not to the same detail). In this case, I think the OP just maybe had a connection to a firm and gets to be there. It will be illegal for OP to do anything of value to the firm and still be unpaid so Im not really sure what the internship would look like.
