Oh Lawdy I'm in a Pickle
Accepted to Cornell - mediocre candidate at best. Put down 2 seat deposits.
And....
My wife and I just got a Peace Corps nomination...for the Caribbean.
I applied before my senior year, and as you could guess, my grades tanked a bit (not awful, but maybe an overall decrease of .06, so bad enough to maybe put me under if I reapplied)
Thoughts? My heart's been pretty set on Cornell law for years now, but this seems like an outstanding offer as well. Also, I know law schools occasionally defer for 2 years, but what about 3? I'm afraid if I reapply 3 years from now, I won't get in.
Okay,

Knock, that amount of posts is not decent. You are bordering on behavior that might disqualify you from taking the bar ^_^

Somehow I doubt the peace corp deployment is gonna involve a lot of time on white, sandy beaches. More like this maybe?
either way, it still beats Ithaca.

Seriously, though, I'm really surprised by this overwhelming response.
I did get a grant, but it's small (less than 1/4 tuition).
So, all of you guys saying PC. Would you really forfeit your guaranteed seat and reapply 3 years later?

FWIW, the one time I actually visited Ithaca it was beautiful, but that happened to be in July. I think the choice depends on what you want to do with a Law degree, and how much you want to do the PC thing. To be able to do it together with your wife sounds like an amazing opportunity. I would think your chances are still pretty good coming back in three years.PinkCow wrote:Ha thanks for the reality!Marionberry wrote:Somehow I doubt the peace corp deployment is gonna involve a lot of time on white, sandy beaches. you should retake the LSAT in the mean time to become more competitive for when you reapply (if necessary)

Or OP might be able to do both. OP: can you defer at Cornell for three years and do your PC tour? This may not have to be an 'either/or' choice for you.BackToTheOldHouse wrote:Screw the Peace Corp. Go to law school.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. Cornell has the process listed for 1 or 2 year deferrals, but makes no mention of 3. That would definitely be my first choice. Hopefully I'll know this week.

Let's guess what Cornell's tuition will be in 3 years. You should probably think about that unless Peace Corp pays a lot of mo...
I love the non-industrialized parts of the Caribbean BTW, I want to retire there. But I rather take my lawyer money there instead of paying more for the most expensive law school.

Peace Corps.
It's one of the few softs that can make a difference, not to mention it's doing something to improve the lot of humanity. It doesn't hurt that you get to do this in a pleasant climate not far from home either.
Go. Do Peace Corps. Go then, young man, rejoice in thy youth.

Take it from someone who is one final away from being a 2L: Do the peace corp and don't look back.
If you don't, I will come to Ithaca next year and beat the hell out of you. And you know what? You'll thank me because you'd know you deserved it.

Do the Peace Corps. When will you have the opportunity to do something like this again?

PinkCow, are you sure you'd have to defer for three years? I thought Peace Corps would end in time for you to start in Cornell Fall of 2013.
Edit: In your shoes I'd probably do the Peace Corps.

Signed on just to answer this. There is NO way that you do not do PC here. And it will make you a better candidate without a retake (but certainly with a retake too). No freaking way you can pass up this opportunity. Congrats.
