Informing Schools of an Upcoming Scholarship/DepositDeadline

I know they usually tell you this could be "helpful" in your standard hold/WL/we just feel like taking forever message, but are they just being diplomatic? Maybe worst case scenario is that it changes nothing, but could upsetting their process expedite a ding? Has anyone had an experience like that?
