URM

Post by allah6969 » Sat Mar 19, 2011 9:23 pm

Are there any strict guidelines for persons considering themselves a URM? For example, can someone simply claim to be a URM and get away with it? I'm just curious.

You can, and you'd prob get away with it for a few years, and then spend a few years in prison.

I'm at Columbia on scholly right now just because I sent them an email and told them I was URM, by the time they found out it was too late and they had already admitted me. Sometimes that's what you gotta do to get ahead in life.

OP raises a good point. I think you actually could, and this could reap great long-term benefits for you. Honestly, I could not imagine anything that could go wrong with this. Who are they to tell you your racial identity anyway? I would go ahead and go for it. Be sure to tell us how it goes. Good luck!

OP, your post reeks of almost every misconception one can have about what URM means, what effect it has, when one should use it, etc. That you managed to exhibit all this in so few words is worthy of commendation.

seriously though, you will get some questions when you show up to campus for the first time. just realize that it's really hard for them to kick you out at this point. be confident, and tell them you're black from the waist down.

Well here is proof that TLSers jump to conclusions over a simple little question. I'm asking because I have a friend who declared himself a URM because he is like 1/16th Cherokee or something and he's gotten a couple full rides to some pretty decent schools. I realize there is nothing I can do about it, nor would I attempt to, but I'm just wondering if he is going to get away with it. I advised him against it but he happened to think it was an excellent idea. I was just wondering if there was anything the school would do about it if they ever were to find out.

1/16th Cherokee - How did he even calculate that? Anyways, if he is a card carrying member, then he has absolutely nothing to worry about. As a matter of fact, he would probably still be fine anyways without a card or any other sort of tribal identification.

Huh.

That's about what I amount to, although I don't have a card. I haven't claimed it on any other application, but I never really identified myself that way. I wonder...
