Well there are no guarantees. Without ED it would be rough but I think with ED you have a good shot and even without you have a shot at some of the easier schools to get into (Cornell/UVa/etc).
If you're interested in PI/govt then you should either take a fat scholly or go to a place with a good LRAP program. Most of the T14 have good LRAPs so I definitely think it is worth it if you are comparing it to Emory without a large scholly.

This seems like good advice. If you want to work in the south, I'd paper all the flagship schools down there. You'll probably get some good scholly offers, and folks in the south love their local SEC school. (Plus you'll get an iTunes gift card from 'Bama, SCORE!)bk187 wrote:Well there are no guarantees. Do you plan on applying to Vandy?

Re: Retake worth the risk
since you want the south- hit all of the southern states flagship schools, and throw your apps to the t14 ( no ED). Only apply to the states you would live and work in for a bit- and see how it goes.
The earlier you apply, the better your chances at getting accepted.- also the more time you have to make a final decision!

Low 3 gpa with a 170 would be struggling to get into most t14 schools. Schools like Cornell isn't favorable to splitters. You would have more luck at Georgetown and maybe Mich/V/P with ED.

Cornell isn't unfriendly to splitters, but it isn't friendly either. I mean it isn't as nice as GULC/UVa/NU can be but it isn't as harsh as Boalt/Duke tend to be.
