Coursework outside of undergrad institution = GPA boost?

Post by Apollo » Tue Feb 01, 2011 12:02 am

I'm a senior going to work in consulting after graduation, and I want to apply to ls in the next few years. My GPA at school is weak but not wretched (3.2). I'm presented with the option of taking online coursework during employment to work toward professional certifications. Besides the obvious benefit of gaining licenses due to this online coursework (which could be taken through any accredited university's distance learning program), it would also likely raise my GPA. Although the raw number of my LSDAS GPA would increase should I get straight A's in 12 or 15 credits of distance coursework, how would adcomms view this jump? It seems like an easy way to correct for mistakes/harder coursework as an undergrad. Too easy.

Once you get your first bachelor's degree, any coursework that follows will not affect your LSDAS GPA. If you'd be taking these courses after you graduate then they won't help that number.

I thought that one's LSDAS GPA is a collection of each transcript from every institution one has attended.

Yes, but only up to the point that you receive your bachelors degree.

Nope.

The best advice I can give is this. If it is possible, you could delay your petition to graduate, even though you've met all the requirements. Petition to graduate in the summer instead of the spring. And during the summer, take a (over?-)loaded schedule of those certification courses you were planning on anyway. It's your best hope, if you're looking for a creative solution. But I don't know how much one 4.0 semester is going to dilute four years of 3.2. Could bring you to 3.3 possibly, but that really isn't that big of a boost. If law school is important to you, and you were going to take the courses anyway, couldn't hurt.

Isn't an associates degree an "undergraduate degree"?

They still mean only bachelor's right?

yeah. Although it would have been nice if they'd taken my 4.0 from my AA.

if you sent in all your transcripts, it was included in your LSDAS gpa

Yeah, sucks about the 3.2. Nothing you can really do at this point. Regardless of whatever work experience you build up... if admissions stays the same your facing a very uphill battle into law school.
