recommend a law-related book/tv show/movie
I asked for biglaw specific recommendations in a different thread, but how about just generally lawyer-related stuff? one of my friends religiously watches/watched boston legal, the deep end, and SVU. i saw an episode or two of each with him and even though i don't know much about lawyers i suspect none of them are that accurate (or entertaining, for that matter). what else you got?

how many of these threads must there be? have people just never heard of Google before? do you understand the basic concept of the internet?

Grouchy much?
I love The Good Wife. People don't get into court that quickly, but some of it is definitely accurate according to my civil procedure class. Also, it's very well scripted, acted, and plotted.

I've heard that the Good Wife is good.
I've been watching Law and Order SVU a lot lately, and I'm really amazed at how accurate they tend to be with procedural things. I'm a 2L whose been to a few trials, taken 2 evidence courses, and done a trial competition, so I know a little about how things work in the court room. SVU tends to capture things like Daubert hearings, and evidentiary issues very accurately.

yeah...calm down. if you really look through the threads, there are like 3-4 copies of almost every subject. And within each thread, there are Tons of people saying the same thing - especially the Dec 2010 LSAT waiting thread. not a big deal - get in the Christmas spirit2011Law wrote:how many of these threads must there be? have people just never heard of Google before? do you understand the basic concept of the internet?

Movies: Michael Clayton, Pelican Brief, Rainmaker, A Few Good Men, The Paper Chase, and for the sake of the holiday season, Miracle on 34th St.

TV Shows: Boston Legal, Law & Order, The Wire, Damages, West Wing
Books: 1L, Law School Confidential, Getting to Maybe are the only one's I'm aware of.

The Defenders is decent. The Practice was good (you can find the first few seasons on Hulu).
The Deep End was terrible.

My Cousin Vinny is TCR
The Wire is also probably good for Crim Law, especially conspiracy stuff.
Boston Legal is entertaining as hell, but for the most part is nothing like the real world of law.

Thirding "The Good Wife." Don't know how accurate it is, legally, but it's a very well-written, well-acted piece of television. And it's only in its second season, so it wouldn't take long to catch up.
Books: I enjoyed One L, thought Law School Confidential was a bunch of crap, and haven't read Getting to Maybe yet (though I plan to). The book I'm reading right now is titled "Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury" and consists of ten notable closing arguments and their background (reading the closing for the Nüremburg trials right now). Interesting reading.

The Devil's Advocate- I found it a little bit too long and a bit predictable at times, but it's still a pretty cool movie.

Will add to the Good Wife chorus, I LOVE the show, it is so well done, I just got my boyfriend into in (who is an attorney) and it didn't take long to bring him up to speed at all.Aqualibrium wrote:I've heard that the Good Wife is good.

Anything where the main character is a defense attorney who successfully fights his/her client's first degree murder charge by getting the real killer to suddenly confess on the stand.

How does no one mention A Civil Action, is it just cited so often that it is assumed?
Also, Erin Brokovich, Philadelphia, The Verdict, And Justice For All (the scene with Pacino after his partner f*cks up his case and the resulting consequences got me misty eyed, I'm sensitive like that).
EDIT: lol, missed someone writing A Civil Action

If you are way too excited about law school and the legal profession, Michael Clayton will bring you back down to earth.
If you are apprehensive and don't really know whether or not biglaw is for you, The Devil's Advocate will inspire you.
But if you could only watch one, watch The Devil's Advocate... twice.

LOVING The Good Wife. Damages was also good.
Am also a fan of Boston Legal, the West Wing, the Practice, etc. The Deep End was horrific though - thank god it got canceled.

Law & Order: Trial by Jury and SVU are really good, and actually helped cement some of the principles into my head when I was studying for the bar. I hated criminal law until I started watching them, tbh.
Watched my first episodes of The Good Wife last night - loved it, except if she puts on a wounded look when someone mentions her husband one more time I'm gonna smash my computer. lol
