Gypsy= URM?

Post by agenthero » Tue Nov 16, 2010 11:25 am

If I'm a gypsy (Irish Traveler), do I qualify as a URM? Should I include addendum?

You can write a DS, but no you won't be considered a URM.

Since this fact has nothing to do with being a URM, no. Again, add it to a diversity statement.

You're not URM, but URM is just the most visible part of diversity admissions. You could still get a diversity boost if you write a DS. Anything that adds diversity can help, and "first I'm my group" stuff helps (as does Amy adversity or socioeconomic disadvantage you faced as a member of your group). Good luck.

Ah, too bad it's not URM. I am 1/8 Gypsy. True story.

I echo the PS thing. You could make a case that even though you aren't a traditional URM, you still ARE an under represented minority in the ACTUAL sense, not just the sense of the color of your skin.

-the following is a joke-

You could talk about how your clan has wandered the shores of the green isle, sleeping under distilleries and living off of the sweet whiskey nectar that drips beneath the floor boards. As your betrothed goes out to sell her hand-made wares, crafted from soda cans and other rubbish, your father plays his accordion while your mother dances in the pale moonlight for shillings, hoping one day to move up the corporate ladder and dance directly for Curt Schilling. But after the local tom-cats moved in (not a name of a gang. Actual tom cats) your clan was forced to move to the wooded inlands where you subsisted off acorns and found mushrooms, and made hooch out of a mix of rotten crab-apples and grandma-spit. Then one day the evil ruler of the lands took a liking to your sister, stole her away to be married. Now the only hope your clan has is to get you through law school so that you may sue for a variety of misdeeds, especially since according to a few LSAT reading comp sections, your clan isn't recognized as having legal national citizen rights. You must go to law school.

Or you could befriend some werewolves.

-end joke (which wasn't funny at all)-

In all seriousness, IF you have a good story to tell about why being an Irish-gypsy makes you unique and/or downtrodden by the "man", then it would be cool to focus on. If its just "My daddy said we were gypsies! He said so when we went on a vacation to ireland after his yearly bonus at Goliath National Bank came in!" then I would just not even go down that road.

I would definitely include both a DS and a vial of your tears. Good luck.

Is there anyone that's had success as a gypsy in law school? Where did you go? Did you face the usual ignorance and persecution? I appreciate the PS advice- right now, mine ends: "I know my numbers are below your medians, but I'm confident I'd be a steal for your school."

that's not confidence. That's arrogance. Why would you be a steal? Why are you so much better than the students they'll already get? Instead of saying that you would be a steal, show them you would be a steal in the rest of the PS/DS.

Also, I hope you aren't offended by my joke- consider it playing off the common ignorance. If I was in admissions and I got a diversity statement that dealt with being a person without a nation so to speak, I would think, "damn, this could be a really unique student to get in the mix." I would focus on not just how your nationality/etc. differs, but really on how your perspective is different than most people's. I think this is what they want when they talk about "diversity".

It might help if you tell us your approx scores (specific is better of course) and what schools you are looking at.
