I've noticed a couple applications ask for my parents' phone number in addition to addresses and occupations.
Has anyone heard of admissions committees calling applicants' parents prior to rendering a decision (or, I guess, after a decision)? If so, what on earth for?
I ask because some of my statements might mention some "true but hush-hush" things about me and about my family. Insofar as these things involve my parents, I have their permission to discuss them, but there are a couple personal lines I might drop that would be news to Mom and Pops if they heard them.
I would love to think it is beyond the realm of possibility that any admissions officer would call my parents, let alone mention any aspect of my statement to them--even in passing--but I hate to leave anything to chance, yanno? Does anyone have any experiences, advice, or "STFU, PARANOID PERSON" sniping for me?

Law schools don't accept orphans. If the adcomms think you might be one, they just call and verify. If you are an orphan, just ask a friend's parents to cover for you.
