Supplies to give prof for LoR

Post by gmreplay » Tue Nov 09, 2010 1:58 pm

From my professor:
"You should give your writers a list of the courses you've taken w/them, the semester and the grade (makes it easier than having to look it up cold), your writing sample, and the name of the schools to which you will apply. "

What exactly is the writing sample I should be giving to the professor? The one I wrote during the LSAT?

So unless I'm forgetting something, I should give them:
A list of classes I took with them
Resume?
Writing sample (whatever that is)
Envelope addressed to LSAC with a stamp
The appropriate LSAC paperwork

Am I missing something?

The writing sample could be something you wrote for that professor or perhaps an editorial or article that has been published. If you don't have a good writing sample, just forget it. I never gave my recommenders a writing sample.

You could give them your DS or PS to help show them what you're alread presenting to the schools.

+1

If you have a draft of your PS, that might be helpful.

I wouldn't give a draft, but then again I went to a school wound up in its own reputation, one that the profs bought into

I read somewhere that you shouldn't give your PS over because you don't want the PS and LoR to look too similar. Thoughts?

Thanks for the quick responses btw guys.

I put some things that I thought it would be good for the prof to include. Like I had one of my recommenders for 3 classes and out of 9 exams I had the absolute highest grade across all sections on 8 and was number 2 on the 9th so I wrote him a letter specifying that with all my saved exams. The other was an upper level English seminar and I provided copies of my final paper. For my 3rd lor (for schools that I thought it might be a boost) I specifically wrote out for my supervisor what law schools wanted to know and some things I though would be good to write about. If you can't write your lor with the person at least let them know what you would like them to touch on.

Yea I did this after they sent them but I think it would have been more to your benefit to do it like a day after you ask them. It wont look quite like a bribe but it will make them write more favorably about you.

I actually did this for one of my professors from study abroad; after the fact of course. He was a pretty cool T.A
