ED app boost: UVA vs. U Mich
UVA appears to count this huuugely. As in, if your numbers make the cut, you're basically auto-admit if you ED.
Anyone have input on U Mich?

Do whichever you prefer first (assuming you have a shot), then do the other.

U Mich requires Nov 1st submit, & Nov 15th getting all the materials.bk187 wrote:Do whichever you prefer first (assuming you have a shot), then do the other.
Doing U Mich 1st is feasible, but doing it second is not.

I guess now it isn't. But at the start of an app cycle it is.

At this point, pick the school you like better.
If you applied to UVA ED first, by the time you heard from them, Michigan ED would be due.

Doing it second is totally feasible, because UVA gets back to you within two weeks (and usually it's less).CGI Fridays wrote:U Mich requires Nov 1st submit, & Nov 15th getting all the materials.bk187 wrote:Do whichever you prefer first (assuming you have a shot), then do the other.

I mean, NOW it's not feasible. But generally speaking, it is.

Re: ED app boost: UVA vs. U Mich
Should have clarified, I'm talking this cycle, starting now.
Anyone know how much weight U Mich gives?
If U Mich doesn't give as much of a boost as UVA, then it's not only about which I'd prefer, 'cause I'd be happy either way. If this were the case, it'd make sense to ED UVA (in my case).

As for LSAT, it's coming Fri but I want to pull the trigger on this the day I get it which is why the premature thread.
Let's say 170-171
If 169 I'd ED U mich where I'd have a greater-than-zilch chance, which would be the case with UVA.

You might get money at Michigan. Why ED?CGI Fridays wrote:3.53-3.57 GPADesert Fox wrote:What are your numbers? It makes a difference.

K, my GPA is below their 25th percentile. That narrows my GPA range a smidge: 3.53-3.55.Desert Fox wrote:You might get money at Michigan. Why ED?
I MIIIIGHT get money, but I also might get dinged. I'm ok with boosting my odds of acceptance at the cost of giving up potential scholly money.
Here's U Mich apps from last cycle with 3.53-3.55, 169-171, excluding international, non-traditional & URM: http://michigan.lawschoolnumbers.com/ap ... ,8&type=jd
Too risky for me. I really want to go to one of these two schools, & I'm gonna be making shit money on LRAP if all goes according to plan anyway.

Re: ED app boost: UVA vs. U Mich
169: Mich ED
170: Mich ED first, then UVA ED, which gives you two bites at the apple
171: Mich RD likely gets you $45k
Michigan does give an ED boost, looking at LSN they took several 166-168's EDs which is at or below their 25th percentile LSAT.

170: No one on LSN applied to U Mich ED last cycle with my numbers, so it didn't help. Never though to look at other ranges to answer the question of "how much boost." Thanks mr. blue, I owe you. Will go U Mich first with this.
171: Here's the trixy part. Yes you're right, but it's certainly possible I get dinged. Here's what I'm lookin' at: http://michigan.lawschoolnumbers.com/ap ... ,8&type=jd
4 $, 1 Admit, & 2 rejected. However, 1 rejected was submitted in January & the other was still in UG. I would /self if I got dinged RD at both U Mich & UVA with a 171, so I think I'll go ED U Mich/ ED UVA anyway.
Thanks very much.

I dont have any evidence of this, but I heard ED at Michigan and you can still get money. Though ED at UVA and you will not.CGI Fridays wrote:K, my GPA is below their 25th percentile. That narrows my GPA range a smidge: 3.53-3.55.Desert Fox wrote:You might get money at Michigan. Why ED?

U Mich explicitly states on their ED page that you shouldn't do it if schollie $ is a factor.trudat15 wrote:I dont have any evidence of this, but I heard ED at Michigan and you can still get money. Though ED at UVA and you will not.
UVA, on the other hand, claims that it does not impact scholly consideration at all.
I realize that law schools have been known to be deceitful now & then, & maybe UVA's BSin', but U Mich certainly doesn't gain anything by tricking us into thinking that ED-ers won't get money & then surprising 'em for the hell of it.
I do remember reading aboot one example of this at UVA, but it came from UVA's mouth, so it's possible they did a couple for media purposes.

Re: ED app boost: UVA vs. U Mich
I don't think that Mich says that because they don't offer any scholarships to ED applicants, I think it's only because the applicant doesn't have a chance to use scholarship information when making their decision. When I spoke to the admissions person at Mich during my visit, she was very clear that they didn't even look at a candidate's application type when considering scholarships, but that just by ED's nature, you would lose any opportunity to negotiate for scholarships.

Just be aware though that Michigan ED is for summer starters only. So you have to prepared to be in Ann Arbor in May or something like that. Unless this is something they commonly ignore or "make exceptions" for....

You just have to be available to start orientation on May 31, 2011. Summer starters have said that having an extra semester of classes helped for OCI.
