Which T14 schools want a Why X essay?
Can anyone tell me which schools prefer receiving a Why X essay? I've heard that Michigan and Penn do, but I'm sure there are more. On that note, which T14 schools do NOT want a why X essay? I think I read somewhere that top 6 schools don't want one. Would that be Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Chicago, and NYU? What about Berkeley?
Thanks in advance

If they say they accept additional info then you can add one, if they don't then don't. If it is well written and insightful it may help a tad, but it isn't going to make you outperform your numbers. If it is bad, or heck even if it is mediocre, you're probably better off without it.
Penn and Mich require additional essays, one possibility being a Why X. I don't know whether they have a preference for that one or not but I doubt it.
That being said, the biggest use for a Why X is to avoid getting YP'ed.

If you're applying to Penn and Mich I would sumbit one, especially if you're gunna ED to either. Supposely, they give you a nice boost.

Just to clarify, Michigan likes "Why Michigan" essays, but doesn't REQUIRE them. Besides the PS you can write up to two other OPTIONAL essays. One of the optional essay options is a "Why Michigan" essay.

MVP and D accept Why X. Cornell doesn't want it.

Cornell has a space for it on the app. Short but you can say what you need to say.im_blue wrote:MVP and D accept Why X. Cornell doesn't want it.

I don't know if you would get a boost, but if you don't, you will lose bit.SupraVln180 wrote:If you're applying to Penn and Mich I would sumbit one, especially if you're gunna ED to either. Supposely, they give you a nice boost.

Does Penn still want a Why X? I've looked at the application and that isn't one of the three options for a supplemental essay (of which you must write one). The first one deals with what you can offer Penn, not why you want Penn per se.
Is it suggested that you write a Why Penn essay in addition to one of these three? Or am I missing something here?

It's the third one. "How does Penn figure into your 5-year plan" or something like that.archie&veronica wrote:Does Penn still want a Why X?
