3.0/170 What next? Forum

I'm currently sitting on a 3.0 GPA from a top-5 public university and a 170 LSAT score. Low-gpa due to documented medical reasons and have an upward grade trend of a 4.0 over the past three semesters.

Looking to apply at:
U of Richmond
Case Western Reserve
U of Miami
Penn State
Villanova

Am I in the right ballpark school wise? Higher? Lower?

You can do better than that with that LSAT of yours. And I would encourage you to aim higher.

I mentioned this anecdote again but stands to be repeated. Knowing students that go to CWRU and also hearing from a recent JD grad from CWRU who was applying for a job at my firm (an accounting firm), they have had very poor success placing students in jobs. Most jobs offered by career services are only available to the top 10% of the class. And most of the top 10% of the class transfer out to a higher-rated school. So very few people can even apply to most decent jobs or internships.

When the partner interviewing the recent grad asked about how many of the 300 or so that graduated in his class had been given job offers upon graduation, the applicant responded 10%, maybe 20% at best.

Have you considered U Illinois or Indiana U (Bloomington)? You would have a shot, and those schools would actually be worth going to in terms of career prospects. Fordham, BC, even Emory are possibilities as you are a splitter and fall on the high end of their LSAT spectrum.

Either way, I would say that you should at least try to apply higher. If your only option is the schools you listed, I would only go if you really believe you current undergrad major is unemployable, cos frankly, those schools struggle to place students in good careers.

UVA doesn't give a shit. Above 3.00 and above 170 is as good as 4.33/180.

What about my stats was the redeeming factor? My softs are fairly strong (full time job during undergrad, helped start a branch of charity organization, fraternity exec member, etc.) and I am lined up for a summer internship in my local D.A.'s office. However, there is one factor I'm worried about and have yet to read any information regarding it. The medical reason for my low gpa was a freshman year bout with depression that lead to me completely withdrawing from class and receiving academic suspension (I basically regressed completely and skipped town at the apex of this emotional time). All of this is documented of course. Does my strong upward trend and softs make up for this?

It's your LSAT. Nothing else really matters.

And also, even though other posters feel confident that you will get into UVA ED, consider that while you are their median LSAT, you are well below their 25th percentile GPA (which is about 3.5, with 3.7 being the median). I'm not sure how they're figuring that that isn't a waste of an ED. I think you do have a strong chance at GULC PT though. But everyone has an opinion, it certainly never hurts to go for it.

People with OP's numbers last year were getting in ED, and the medians aren't unchanged. UVA loves to whore itself out for ED splitter and reverse splitters, keeping the median where it is.

Also it's not a waste because you hear back in 15 days, and then can apply somewhere else ED, with some exceptions (ie Northwestern).

Your financial situation should also be considered. For possible merit scholarship money, apply to Iowa, Indiana, Arizona State & Washington & Lee.

You will have no problem getting multiple offers from top-twenty schools as long as you do a good job with the rest of your application. I know this from experience. Michigan, Cornell, UVA, Georgetown, Northwestern--these are all reaches but not unreachable, especially if you have some post-college work experience. Apply early to your top choice.

The LSN data doesn't really bear this out.
