For those applying to Duke: in the application instructions, the school lays out required material for the personal statement and says that there is "no required length." I take this to mean, within reason, the essay can stretch between 2-4 pages or so. Is this accurate?

Pretty much. It's a judgment call. I'd do 2-3 pages unless you have something extraordinarily compelling to say. Any more and you risk the Committee just skipping over important parts, as well as questioning your judgment for writing so much when the same points could be made more concisely.
