Is it possible to defer after being admitted on a waitlist

Post by lawschool2014 » Thu Aug 05, 2010 4:43 pm

I was waitlisted to a top 5 this year and was rejected. If I was actually admitted from the waitlist to a top 5, do they sometimes grant deferrals to WL candidites? Not like I will have the oppurtunity to try but just curious if anyone has had experience in this area.

Thanks

I don't know about a T14 school, but my friend was waitlisted at a T30. He didn't get off the list till the last minute, and they let him defer, but he had to show that it was for a legit reason (needing to wrap up a case at work), and not just because he felt like it.

I don't know the answer to your question, but my best guess is that deferral would not be an option since law schools are trying to fill the current class from the waitlist. It will be interesting to read other replies since many get waitlisted, not due to lackluster credentials, but since they applied late in the cycle.

it varies by school but I believe more often than not they don't let you defer because they are looking to fill a spot ASAP .

ETA In my experience no deferral possible.
