Anyone Know About The Legal Market in India?

Post by henry_kravis » Sat Jul 31, 2010 11:44 pm

Pretty much the title. I've been interested in working in another country for a while now, so I was wondering if anyone knows about the legal market in India (i.e. is the situation as bad as it is here in the US) and how one would go about pursuing a career in India if that's something I choose to do?

Also, can people with a law degree in the US work in India and vice versa?

Good article, basically you have no chance under the current laws.

Read the economist article its really interesting.

Key Points:

Laws restrict firms of 100+ people from easy firing/ hiring leading to almost all lawyers belonging to small firms in India. Causes inefficiencies and means market conditions there are vastly different from many other countries.

Recently passed laws make it even harder for foreign companies to open or work with law firms in India. [However this does seem like it could impede the growth of outsourcing legal work to much cheaper workers overseas]

Why would you want to live in India? It's horrible there.

Not sure if your goal is to work within the Indian justice system, but there are opportunities for American lawyers there. I think you may need a little more experience though:

I thought I saw on ATL that Michigan had some sort of foreign opportunity for graduates in India.

Why do you want to work in India though? The bureaucracy and corruption make working with any part of the Indian governance systems pure hell. Besides, though the quality of life may be higher in some respects (access to cheap labor, for instance), the compensation you would get would be significantly lower than in Singapore or Hong Kong, for instance.

If you're interested in PI work, sure, but only if you are absolutely prepared to deal with how generally incompetent offices and workers in India can be (well, maybe it's just a different work culture -- more bureaucratic and hierarchical; I just prefer the US).

I want to work there because my family is going to move there, and because there is a chance to make a bigger impact in India vs the US. If I were to work in politics in India, I could have a huge impact as opposed to just being another corporate attorney in biglaw hating life. Even on the corporate side of law (which is what I enjoy), there is a lot more action in India than the US, so I'd also be able to make a bigger mark in that regard.
