I'm sure this has been asked before, but I did a search and wasn't able to find anything.
What options are available when the amount awarded through GradPLUS loans are not enough to cover the cost of living? This is a question for a friend of mine, and he has already cut a lot of corners so there aren't really a lot of places where he can save some money. The COL estimate really is just too low. Should he look at private loans?

If he does not have medical issues and/or is not supporting a family, the COL is not too low- he is living too large.

http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 5&t=120896 might be a help if he's looking to supplement with private loans.
Otherwise, some recommendations:
Sell car, buy bicycle or bus pass. This cuts out the cost of gas and car insurance.
Eat moar ramen. You can have a ramen dinner for under 50 cents.
