after law school contingency plans?

Post by summoner » Thu Jul 22, 2010 1:59 pm

I know, I know, you're all special snowflakes who will buck the trend and great jobs right after law school because you'll get better grades, work harder, network better, etc., but I really am curious; does anyone actually have a contingency plan? If you're going into $150,000 of debt, do you have a plan on what to do if you graduate and can't get a job in 6 months or a year after graduation? Not trying to troll, or flame, just seriously trying to understand the 0L thought process.

My plans don't include debt.
Odds increase significantly that I'll be without a law job, but that's an easier pill to stomach than the possibility of $200K (if you include living etc. for 3 yrs) & still no law job.

I'm depending on my specialness I suppose :P . Really, though, the fallback would be working for a parent that's a solo. Wouldn't be ideal or pay much for that matter, but it's something. Maybe choose a different career path? MBA? I don't think many people could stomach the thought or afford 12 years of med school after completing a JD.

I could always work for a doc review gulag in NYC. But I heard the competition is kind of stiff

I was going to write a scam blog.

That or start selling drugs. I'll use my networking skillz to create a robust book of clients while I get established doing criminal defense.

Back in the military for another 10 years and retire at age 40 as a Major.

Or work for my families abstracting company.

OP asked if you had 6 figures of debt and get NO JOB AT ALL, what would you do.

Besides the fact that it is a stupid question, the only realistic options are keep trying, flee the country, or killself.

I heard they're taking applications for 2020 Census workers. Sounds promising...

I'm fairly certain I have a good non-legal backup plan that would allow me to get hired for a legal job within a few years.

Yeah, understandable if this were a serious post.

But the OP is just a scamblogger who is here to berate people and bask in the glory of his own infinite wisdom.

Don't tell me it's "go to prison, write a book, get released, get hired by big firm" because that was totally my plan.

No. I called dibs.

But seriously, I think I have a decent backup option if things really hit the fan. But I'm gonna do my best not to let that happen.

In other words, "no, no contingency plan, stop making me feel bad."

In other words, if I have 6 figures of debt and can get NO JOB AT ALL (as per your dumb hypothetical) what kind of backup plan is there outside of the 3 I listed earlier?

You do realize how stupid it is to ask for contingency plans under a hypothetical that assumes all contingency plans fail, right?

OP: "What if you graduate and can't get a job?"
TLS: "I keep looking and applying until I get some job"
OP: "NO! NO JOB! ONLY OPTION IS KILLSELF!"

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
