What makes a LOR good?

Post by 2807 » Wed Jul 21, 2010 1:20 am

Howdy folks,

I see some posts that say their LOR's are great and wonder why? Other than the obvious things like-- "good student, good leader, active, etc..." what else is valuable?

Thanks

I hate to say it, but you'll know it when you see it. Some sound very rote and formulaic, others sound like they were written specifically to extoll how utterly amazing you are.

If you look on Cornell's admissions site for example, you'll find a facult recommendation form. Look it over and think about the qualities listed. Now think about where you would fit in regarding these qualities. That's one way to think about it.
