Which laptop to buy?

Post by giantsnumb1 » Wed Jul 14, 2010 12:16 pm

I'm gonna be a 1L in about a month, and I want to purchase a laptop. Does anybody have any suggestions which one to buy?

Watch out, people are about to be mean to you.

There is a very long thread about this topic already that might be helpful. I know that I just bought the Thinkpad X201 because it seemed to be a very nice blend of portability and stability.

Of PCs, Lenovos seem to have the best reputation here, though there are many who hate them.

Macs are popular if you're willing to pay more.

Basically, just get something that will last, that is fairly modern, and that you can carry with you to and from classes without being too uncomfortable.

Thanks for your suggestion and letting me know about the previous thread.

My law school, on their website, recommends getting a laptop with a cd/dvd rom. I notice how they've basically stopped making laptops with cd drives. Should I take the school's recommendation seriously?

The laptop that I just purchased does not have an optical drive. I do, however, have a docking station that has one.

I don't think you'll ever need an optical drive, but if you do you can pick up a cheap one at a computer/electronics store that plugs in via usb. No problem there!

I don't know where you are buying your laptops, but pretty much all laptops except for ultra-portables are still shipping with optical drives.
