How many letters of recommendation?

Post by Wustlmike19 » Sat Jul 10, 2010 10:35 pm

Hey all,

I'm applying to LS this fall (a year out of college), and the majority of my law school choices recommend 2 letters of admission. I already have 2 great letters from 2 professors. During my time after graduation, I worked for aout 6 months as a research assistant and book editor for the upcoming book of a very prominent lawyer in my city. He is also known nationally. Today he offered to write me a LOR, and I told him I'd think about it.

So my question is, should I send in 3 letters to the schools that would accept more than 2 but only recommend 2? And should I send one professor's letter and his letter, to the schools that only accept 2?

Any thoughts?

If schools take 3, yes, send 3.

If schools accept only 2, then send the 2 from the people whose letters are best, which means that they provide thoughtful and specific examples of your academic and character strengths. The law schools do not care that the 3rd guy is a prominent lawyer in your city and known nationally -- really, this is irrelevant except insofar as it establishes him as a credible letter writer -- but they will appreciate his letter if he actually knows you and uses his knowledge to evaluate you in comparison to lawyers or prospective law students.

Send all 3 in unless they limit you to 2.

LOR's are vastly overrated, so don't worry about this.
