Yield Protection

Post by kartal » Wed Jul 07, 2010 1:18 pm

Sorry for my ignorance in this subject. Can someone explain what yield protection is and how law schools exercise this? Does applying early protect you from the yield protection? Any explanation will greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am certainly no expert, but based on what I've read during my short time on TLS, yield protection is when a school rejects or waitlists you because your numbers are better than those typically accepted by that school... for example, if you have HYS numbers and apply to a school that is ostensibly your safety, they will waitlist you even though you have a UGPA/LSAT score good enough for their school. It has something to do with rankings, I assume (it seems like everything does).

I know some schools are notoriously bad yield protectors, so applying ED would let them know that you want to go there and that they're not just your safety.
