LOR Sample and/or Advice

Post by sven » Tue Jul 06, 2010 1:33 pm

I asked my former boss (from when I was working as a teacher abroad) for a LOR and she was very happy to write one. However, she has never written a LOR before and assumed that it was just 2-3 sentences saying that I will be a good lawyer. When I explained that it was supposed to be about a page long, she got a bit nervous but said that if I show her a sample, she would be able to do it. I've been looking online for advice to give LOR writers, but no concrete samples of what is appropriate, especially from bosses rather than professors. Does anybody here have any resources that could help me? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

You could give her a list of the traits that are important to law school and give her specific questions to answer in the letter. Some schools (Stanford does, I know) have forms to fill out. You could use those questions to give her an idea of what law school is looking for.

As a side note: How does someone working in education not know what a letter of recommendation is?

You don't need LORs to go to university in many European countries, so high school teachers there aren't familiar with them. Sometimes they write out a couple of sentences and make a few check marks in a form for students that want to do an exchange program in the USA or UK, but she told me she has never had to write an actual letter before.
