How Many Law Schools Do Most ppl apply to
I am planning to stay in NY/NJ for law school. In total I have about 15 to choose from and a few will be way out of my reach. This brings my list down to about 10.
Is 10 enough for a 3.6 and 155, w/extensive work experience and no school activities?
How many schools do did u apply or plan to apply to?

I could be totally wrong, but I thought I saw somewhere that the average is 14-17...
For me, since I was not too particular about location, I applied to about 20 and spread them all over the map.

I applied to 12. I also knew what market I wanted to work in though, so there was little point in applying to places that wouldn't do well in it.

I had the same geographical concern and started with 4, but with fee waivers, I added another 3 (just a bit farther away).

Geez, I don't know about you guys, but 20 sure seems like a lot. 10 even seems like a bunch too. After evaluation of which schools you have a decent shot at (above the median in lsat and gpa), and ones that do not have cripplingly high tuition costs, you should be looking at a much more modest sized list.
I could see if you were touting a 168 instead of a 155 that the list would grow - because at this point, you're applying to TT & TTT schools with the expectation of a full scholarship, and also top schools with decent money or paying sticker at an excellent program.
But given that you're limited geographically and probably to the lower-tiered schools because of your numbers, I'm not sure I see the value in the shotgun approach to applying. I just don't see 10 schools that would be worth the application fee. I would think it would be more in the neighborhood of 5-7.

I have a list of 20. I'll probably apply to closer to 15. Hopefully, I'm only going to have to do this once, so I want to go all out.SJU2010 wrote:I am planning to stay in NY/NJ for law school. I can't believe no one else has said this: you know that the kinds of schools that you can get into with a 3.6/155 won't make you very competitive in the New York legal market, right? Retake.

I applied to quite a few but almost all supplied fee waivers for me. Figured I'm attending the school that didn't.

Re: How Many Law Schools Do Most ppl apply to
I've got a list of 20 right now, hope to apply to around 15.
My thought process is I don't want to miss out on any scholarship opportunities. I may kind of like Villanova better than Temple, for example, but if Villanova offered me nothing and Temple offered me $$$, well, that's going to change my outlook. I'd rather spend the time applying than wonder if I'd get in / get a better offer to schools that I skipped.

also, using one offer as leverage against another.snapdragon wrote:I've got a list of 20 right now, hope to apply to around 15.

I believe statistics show the average number of schools applicants apply to is around 7 to 8. On here it is probably a bit higher. I applied to 20, but I sought out a number of fee waivers.

You should retake.
I knew I wanted to stay in GA or FL, so I applied to 7.

Re: How Many Law Schools Do Most ppl apply to
It's always good to try and leverage offers if you can. I managed to do that last cycle at a few places. Had I chose to attend said schools, I would have saved an additional 10-15k total. You only apply once, might as well go in guns blazing.TommyK wrote:Geez, I don't know about you guys, but 20 sure seems like a lot. 10 even seems like a bunch too. yes but it's less powerful. i am so so so glad i applied to schools i didn't want to go to.acrossthelake wrote:I'm thinking of applying only to 6, but I think that's a fair bit below the norm on this website, though only slightly below the overall norm. I've considering applying to more to leverage, but I'm not sure--does that work if the leverage you're using is considered "lower" in rankings?

it can't hurt. i was really surprised by the schools that gave me money, and who cared about whom. i had a fee waiver so i just applied everywhere, but if i hadn't, i would have anyway, knowing what i do now.acrossthelake wrote:Hmmmm maybe I'll add a few then. Re: How Many Law Schools Do Most ppl apply to
I'm applying to 12. No sense in not applying to this many I think.
A) Can prob get a lot of fee waivers
B) Leverage
C) May decide I want $$ over rankings
D) No idea where I want to live after law school
OP. I think 10 schools is enough if you know you want to stay in NY/NJ. Just make sure you apply to a few safeties.
