ED at big reach?
Hi,
I am a student at a Top public university with a 3.3/174. I was wondering if is should do ED at a school that is an enormous/to impossible reach (Columbia) or do it at less ridiculous reach UVA, NYU or something similar, or do no ED anywhere.
Is there any negative to EDing to a super reach?

Yes -- you're wasting an ED. I do think you have a shot at UVA RD, but if you're willing to go to a T-10 at sticker I don't see much reason not to ED there. UVA is by far one of the most receptive schools to ED. It doesn't seem to make that much of a difference at Chicago or Columbia because they know they're the hottest stuff after HYS.planQ wrote:Hi,

The biggest negative of ED'ing is that the school has no reason to offer you any financial aid (particularly merit based)
I think you're out at Columbia Law even with ED, but NYU may give you a decent chance. Personally I think you have a good chance of getting in UVA RD, based on your high LSAT, but other posters probably know better.
My advice, ED to NYU if you really want to go there, it's the highest ranked school you could reasonably get into with ED

Why not ED to Columbia in Sept, and if they WL or reject you than ED to UVA or NYU?

I would think ED at either NYU or Chicago would be your best bet.

+1, although NYU may not still be an ED option by the time Columbia gets back to you.Mike12188 wrote:Why not ED to Columbia in Sept, and if they WL or reject you than ED to UVA or NYU?
If you like UVA, i think this is a reasonable strategy. again, keep in mind that you may miss out on merit-based awards if you are accepted ED.

Credited. It's all about risk/reward balancing. If you ED somewhere in CCN and don't get in, there is a possibility your GPA could keep you out of the top 17. If you ED at MVP, you are going to have a better shot at getting an acceptance. You probably want to evaluate the rest of your app. Do you feel extremely confident about your PS/Rec Letters/Resume? If so, then EDing higher might not be a bad call.Tanicius wrote: Yes -- you're wasting an ED.

Because you can't ED to both Columbia and NYU in the same cycle. Both ED deadlines are earlier than the other school's notification.Mike12188 wrote:Why not ED to Columbia in Sept, and if they WL or reject you than ED to UVA or NYU?

ED to NYU or Chicago, depending on which market you want to work in.

can't you ED at both and just withdrawal from one of the ED's if you get in at the other one?

Re: ED at big reach?
Nope. The only possible way to double dip on EDing is to be rejected/deferred/wl'ed from somewhere and then apply ED somewhere else. The only real way to do it and be assured of getting a decision back in time to ED somewhere else is to ED at UVA first since they give you a decision back within 15 days.adameus wrote:can't you ED at both and just withdrawal from one of the ED's if you get in at the other one?
