Why Are You Applying? Should We Be Honest?
I'm curious as to why you are all applying to law school. I have recently been analyzing the reasons for which students decide to attend graduate school, and law school in particular. Could you help me?
I have written about this on my blog (see my profile) and hope that I can supplement my understanding with your experiences.

Law is one of the most stable fields to enter right now. The demand for lawyers is really high and great starting salaries are practically a given.

Re: Why Are You Applying? Should We Be Honest?
Honestly,
Uh, I want to be a lawyer. I loved my firm internship. The law related courses I've taken in undergrad have been my favorite classes so far and I love reading copyright/trademark related books such as "Inherent Vice" and "Free Culture". I believe I would want to go to law school even if I were guaranteed to only make $50000 a year for the rest of my life (albeit I'd go to a cheaper ls). I know no one can know for sure that a legal career is right for them until they are actually working a full time position.
I'm not trying to act all high and mighty or like I know it all, but what I don't understand is why despite the legal market being over saturated and reports that the majority of lawyers hate their job, people continue to go to law school for the wrong reasons. It's kind of my pet peeve. Whatever, I guess to each his/her own.

This. Don't forget how relatively cheap a good legal education has become.romothesavior wrote:Law is one of the most stable fields to enter right now. The demand for lawyers is really high and great starting salaries are practically a given.

Law school is also a place of rigorous intellectual discourse and personal growth. My parents have always told me that I am good at arguing, so I am sure I will do very well in law school. Upon completing my education, I look forward to the stimulating work that young biglaw associates engage in.

I have no real skills. Being a lawyer is the only option.

To litigate.
To file class action suits.
To have the letters "JD/MBA" at the end of my name.

Re: Why Are You Applying? Should We Be Honest?
Because I want to learn to think like a lawyer, and feel the skills and education one receives in a law school will enable me to accomplish my goals in life.
Other advantages: it takes 3 years as opposed to six for an econ PhD, and there are more options outside of academia. In econ, I'd basically be busting my butt for 30 years to get a tenured position, and have virtually no influence on the real world unless I became a Sachs or Krugman.
With law, on the other hand, I can make an impact. Small, measureable, and incremental at best, but at least I could see the outcome of my work, and make a contribution to those causes I wish to serve. Won't be rich though
