And Michigan hasn't failed, just Detroit. Still have the Chicago market to go to.

Last time I checked, detroit was the only meaningful city in michigan. And analogizing the challenges in california (considerable) to those in michigan (catastrophic, apocalyptic) is just laughable.

I have no bone to pick with michigan as a school - its fabulous - but I think this is a real question

In the light of the fact that exactly 2 percent of Michigan's budget is funded by the state, it's really not.

For all practical intents and purposes, Michigan is a private school.

No offense to the OP, but this is ultimately a relatively silly question.

Figure out what your debt would amount to at either place. Go visit schools. Consider which geographic location you'd prefer. Ponder Chicago vs. DC (if applicable). Make a decision. Live long and prosper. Really, it's that simple.

You'd be foolish to think that a couple of spots worth of difference mean anything. UVA and Michigan are as equal as any two schools out there.
