OMG. I hate myself. Please help - advice.
So I decided on CUNY and on the admissions packet it says "all of the items may be sent no later than June 1st". I thought that included the $500 seating deposit. I just realized I misread it and the deposit was due last week. I just sent the Admissions office an email accepting admissions and stating that they will receive my deposit on Monday. However, do you think that they will penalize me for being late? I received an email on Friday from the school stating another congrats. on my admissions so that's the only thing that gives me a piece of mind. Please please someone give me some advice. Excuse me while I try to relieve myself from my panicking state of mind.
Edit:
Well... I didn't call after all. Or send the check. I got into one of my top choices today. CRAZY the way the world works. That said, I still think CUNY is amazing and deserves ALOT more credit than some of you give it and it's was still in my top 3 choices.
Thanks for the advice =]

Not to be a jerk, but you might look upon this as a blessing in disguise.

If the note about the deposit says that it needs to be postmarked by last week, you're screwed. Sorry :-/

I did a similar thing (at another school) and it wasn't a problem, although mine was only one business day late.
In any event, it's not worth stressing over. Either they'll take your money or they won't. My hunch is they will.

I hope so. I love you for giving me some hope. How late was your deposit?

Sorry, I was editing my reply while you were responding...
I was one business day late, and it was for a different school.

I could give you at least 3 solid ones but ..... more importantly, why were you sold on cuny? What are your career objectives?melanieB wrote:No Sorry. I can't see how it could be?miamiman wrote:I'm gathering you haven't come around to my "view this as a good thing" thesis?

Should I call the admissions office and explain that I misunderstood or should I keep silent and let them receive the $500?

I want to do public interest. I know it's not the best school in terms of ranking but I am still impressed from what I know about their public interest background.miamiman wrote:I could give you at least 3 solid ones but ..... more importantly, why were you sold on cuny? That's true of any law school. It may actually be LESS true of a school like CUNY that (generally) throws around a lot of scholarship money. Better to go to a 4th Tier school like Cuny for free than a 2nd Tier school like Chapman at Sticker, for example.

I mean...debt and career prospects together are #s 1 and 2. Pecking order in the tight NYC market is #3.
I can think of, off the top of my head, no fewer than 8 law schools that place primarily into nyc that are going to get bites at the same apple before you do. This isn't TLS being elitist; this is just the market reality, private and public.

Okay, minus the fact that some of you think CUNY sucks, please any one tell me what the best options are:
1. going to Admissions personally on Monday and handing in the $500 check?
2. Mailing the check, being silent, and waiting to see if they accept it?
3. Calling CUNY up and explaining the situation after mailing it.

Strike the crippling debt theory. CUNY is inexpensive (at least compared with sticker prices in the $40-50k range; this is obviously relative), so it's a better choice than just about all of its similarly ranked peers. Whether or not it can get OP the job she desires is another matter, but the school is known for public interest, and if she does land a job in PI, statistics I have seen indicate she will have a reasonably fulfilling career. I presume she's already done a cost benefit analysis and knows the likelihood of getting the type of job she wants as a CUNY grad.TheBigMediocre wrote:Crippling debt and an unfulfilling career.miamiman wrote:I could give you at least 3 solid ones but ..... more importantly, why were you sold on cuny? 4. Take a chill pill.
No way will CUNY refuse your money. Wild hunch.

Thanks guys, I hope you both are right. I don't know what I would do if they flat out decided not to take me.

Call Monday morning, explain, apologize profusely, and then when they tell you it's okay --- ask them whether you should send it or bring it in personally.
I honestly doubt that they're going to tell you it's too late.

I really doubt this will be a problem.
And I realize people here LOVE to hate on lower-ranked schools, but CUNY is not a typical Tier 4 school. They're cheap(er) and exclusively try and place graduates in public interest. They also have a pretty solid reputation amongst PI organizations in the area. It's a very different thing than going to a typical Tier 4 school, especially since CUNY doesn't accept people without some prior public service background, which would presumably give people some contacts already.

All you guys crapping on op are looking REALLY foolish right now. You should definitely do your research before opening your mouths. CUNY is fine for what OP wants and is a much more responsible move that paying sticker for like Cardozo IMO.
