UVA 2014
I'm trying to gauge how much of an impact being a VA resident has when applying to UVA. I'm thinking of moving to DC for a year since my cycles not going to hot right now. I can live in NOVA and commute to DC which would allow me to establish residency and hopefully help. Any thoughts on whether or not I'd have a realistic change if I do follow through?

interesting. i just posted the original about an hour ago.YCrevolution wrote:luhrenzo wrote:bump: flew of the page. forums on fiyah![]()
The bottom post on the Admissions forum page I'm seeing was from April 17.
Anyways: VA residency helps. 40% of the seats (and I think just about 10% of the applications) are for/from Virginia residents. It will improve your chance (as will your URM status), although you're still facing an uphill battle (below 25% on both LSAT/GPA). VA residents also get $5000 off tuition, so if you do get in, law school will be $15,000 cheaper.
i realize im a long shot but i know VA isnt a very mex saturated state so i was curious if it would have a significant impact but I'm guessing not. thanks tho

I don't want to burst your bubble, but 162 seems too low, even being a URM and VA resident. Can you retake in June? IF you can pull 166ish or higher, I would think you could significantly increase your chances.

Re: UVA 2014
im just wary of taking it a dreaded 3rd time. its getting too late in the game for me to gear up and study again so i'd prob have to take the sept test. i really regretted taking it the second time cause i know my practicing had slacked. how bad does a 3rd take look and is it worth it? i was consistently avg. 168 but obviously PT scores don't matter. im not sure if UVA is one of the schools that only looks at the higher score or not

Are you dead-set on UVA? What about something like William and Mary? Washington and Lee? Maybe GW?
I could be wrong about the numbers. URMs are always harder to pinpoint. Add that with an ED and VA resident, and maybe you can squeeze by. I think it is unlikely, though.
I'd say cast a very wide net if you decide not to retake.

yeah i actually got WL at both W&M and W&L and rejected from GW. I'm hoping I can get in somewhere higher ranked than those three (currently on vandy WL) but UVA has become a dream over the past year. what are your thoughts on a 3rd lsat take?

Even the schools that claim to average LSAT scores (worst-case scenario for a retake) have the same standard of reporting the highest LSAT scores to the US News rankings.
Retake if you're serious about UVA!

Retake if UVA is your thing. I can't see see you getting into UVA if you are getting rejected from schools ranked ~30th. It's a Top 10, after all. Rankings are roughly equivalent to entrance difficulty. It'd be a waste of a cycle to only apply to UVA next year if you already applied to a wider net this year. I'd say either go this cycle if you can get off the waitlist or retake and apply to the same schools next cycle along with UVA.
