Does scheduling a visit with a school really matter or does it depend on the school. how can you tell if it depends on the school.

It depends on the school. Generally, schools that have a reputation for yield-protection will probably appreciate a visit, especially if your numbers are competitive. If you're borderline, visiting could also help you get off the waitlist.
